Six Undefeated Conference Championships
Well, they did it. With a 66-12 win over Fred T. Foard, and unbelievable conference season performance was finalized. Who would have thought a team that was not even winning 50% of its matches could pull this off. Great job by a determined group to still have a successful season.
In a night that we honored our Seniors, the Tigers of Foard fell prey to the wrath of the Tribe. Jonathan Troutman obtained his 100th career pin. Shane Broyhill resolved any doubt as to who was really the best 160 pounder on our team. Two underclassmen stepped into the spot light to solidify the line up. A great night to remember for your final home conference match.
Lance Eckard grapped in total control to win his first varsity match of the season. Lance stepped out in the 277 weight class to fill a void that had hurt the Tribe all year. It was a great win and everyone was happy for Lance.
Freshman Justin Baumgarner took to the mat at 147 in his first every conference mat. Justin made good use of his opportunity and controlled his opponent with a 5-2 lead until he pinned at 3:47.
Next Goal: Sixth Straight Conference Tournament Championship

The most intense and largest crowd of the season came to witness a history making performance or the end of a five year streak of conference wrestling championships at St. Stephens. The home crowd went away relieved and joyed that wrestling at St. Stephens still prevailed as a conference championship program.
RS Central came into the match with a 4-0 conference record and a up and coming program. RS Central has been rebuilding their program with the leadership of Coach Rich Cox and had arrived as serious contender to topple the Tribe's domination of the Southwestern Foothill Conference.
The Tribe had posted a subpar record for its program this year and had only broken above the .500 mark for wins in the past two weeks. There were serious concerns that the streak of conference championship teams would come to an end with the RS Central match.
As it turned out, the match last night was wrestled and supported by the home crowd just like days of old. Our wrestlers fought with the old Tribe Pride and the crowd stomped, clapped, screamed, and provided the "coaching from the stands" instructions that always makes it a great event. Everybody likes to yell "Shoot the Half" (as if the the wrestler is really going to listen). I think I did hear someone yell "Five on Two". No matter what came from the crowd, all of it inspired the best that each wrestler could offer.
One wonders over the coarse of a year if all the trips, camps, and fundraising will payoff and is it worth all the effort. Last night when you saw all alumni wrestlers return to support the program, the fans congradulating the wrestlers, kids with smiling faces, and the home crowd celebrating on the gym floor, you walked out thinking "Its worth every minute of it".

The Tribe took one step closer to a conference championship Tuesday with a 52-18 win over Burns. A closer match was expected due to the close lost that Burns had against RS Central 34-32.
The Tribe is now 4-0 in conference and will battle RS Central (4-0) Friday night. The match up will be close and expectations for the young Tribe will high. A 6th straight conference championship streak is on the line for this group.

HE'S BACK
After serving his time of duty in the Army and Iraq, our TV Star, Billy Baker is back in the Tribe village. Billy will be rejoining the Tribe to assist Coach Carpenter for the duration of the season starting this Monday. Let's all take a moment to reflect on how fortunate his family, and we all are, to have the blessing that our husband, father, and respected coach is back in the USA and safe from harm. WE MISSED OUR BILLY.
Coach Carpenter has lead the Tribe to a 3-0 conference record and Billy rejoins us just in time for "Championship Week". The Tribe will face a tough Burns 3-1 conference team and then the currently undefeated in conference RS Central 3-0. The Burns match is at Burns and RSC will be at our house on Friday at 6:30.

Sam Monish took his second tourament campionship with his top level finish at 119. Bradley Pendleton took second at 125.
Travis Paap, George Hahn, Justin Baumgarner, and Seth Eckard all finished in 3rd.

Tribe is King of the Mountain Again
In a pivotal match to stay in the conference race, the Tribe climbed and conquered Kings Mountain for a 51-24 win. This kept the Tribe in the conference race with a 3-0 record.
Travis Krogman, Emilio Gilvaja, Travis Paap started the charge with pins. Freshman Travis Paap was in his first varsity conference match of his career. He controlled his opponent and held a 6-2 lead before he accomplish is first conference pin at 3:38 in the match. Krogman was caught sleeping and was stunned with a quick first takedown by his opponent. Fortunately, this awoke the sleeping terror and "Krogzilla" came to life. After slinging his opponent all over the mat like a Japanese Tank, he pinned his opponent in 2:52. Krogzilla was quickly zap with high voltage electricity by the coaching staff and he returned to his dormant stage of Sleepy Travis. Springs Road was safe for another night. Senior Emilio Gilvaja increased his conference record to 3-0. This is a great start for the first year wrestler and Emilio has made a significant contribution to this year's team. Emilio pinned his opponent in 4:44.
At this point of the meet, Saint held a tenuous 18-12 lead. Saint the went back to the Saint Stephens of old with four dominating matches. Jesus "Aztecinator" Vazquez major decisioned 10-0. Kyle Stephens wrestled his most agressive match of the year and tech falled his opponent 15-0. Kevin Indenbaum remembered to take his watch off and pinned his opponent in 3:10. Then The Troutman snared his limit with a pin in 0:41. Obviously, Jonathan had a lot of homework to do Tuesday night.
This brought the score to 39-12. Kings Mountain made thier expected charge the next three matches to close to 39-24. Freshman Cody Rink demonstrated great effort battling an upper classman, but lost 7-6 in the closing seconds of the match. Junior Trent Bumgarner grappled back to tie the score in the third period, but lost in overtime. Cody's and Trent's great effort, even with it being a 3 point team loss each, actually sealed the win for Saint. Even if Kings Mountain pinned in the next two weigh classes they could not have won the match.
Saint swept the last two matches with more pins. Senior Shane "Shanekinstine" Broyhill pinned in 0:59 (not as much homework to get to as Troutman) as the villagers screamed in stands and young girls fainted. Junior Dylan "Godomighty" Godfrey pinned in 1:59 after he commandth a wallowing 9-2 lead and caused his opponents nose to turn into a river of blood for one minute. Don't try this at home sports fans. This stuff will make you hurt for a while.

Catch Up Time for the Whole Tribe Wrestling Program
There are many subjects that need to addressed in this update. Events have somewhat prevented more current and timely updates to the web site. I apologize to those of you that usually like to read my scribble after a match or a week of wrestling. And for the most part, this little web page is the only place our wrestlers will ever receive some offering of public media recognition. Parents like to see their sons name in print even if is just on this "lost in internet space" web page. This point is what I have regretted the most. To the Seniors, I apologize. You deserved better after four years of dedication to the wrestling program.
The Wrestling Team has finally impoved its season record to just over .500, 13-12. After two straight conference wins to a 2-0 conference record, the Tribe will face their first critical match Tuesday night agains Kings Mountain. Everything will have to go in the Tribes favor to clench this much needed win and keep our hopes alive for a sixth straight conference championship. We need to pack the house with support for our young team. Go get the neighbors and the grandparents. And you wrestlers, if you got a girlfriend, then tell them and their parents to be at the match. We'll either bring down the house or go down in a ball of flames.
Our two conference wins have come from the struggling Hickory program and from Crest. You can view the scores from our Current Dual Team Record on the Latest News page.
A comment to highlight at this point is "Thank You Larry Carpenter". Had it not been for Coach Carpenter's effort to graciously step forward in the absence of Coach Baker, our program could have fallen similar to the dark level of the Hickory program. Many parents and people, not having a broad association with wrestling programs, don't realize how fragile a winning tradition is in a wrestling progarm. While the Tribe has struggled this year with several young wrestlers in the line up, we have a disciplined program and a winning record. "We still have the potential for another Conference Championship". That's a statement that many programs don't even imagine in their most secrete thoughts. Wrestling is a sport of discipline and sacrifice. Coach Carpenter has kept those characteristics in our program.
The Tribe does have some individuals that are receiving state wide 3A attention. Senior Jonathan Troutman (25-1) is ranked #1 @ 135, Junior Kyle Stephens (19-11) is ranked #13 @ 125, Junior Dylan Godfry (24-8) is ranked #8 @ 171, and Junior Travis Krogman (19-3) is ranked #12 @ 189. Sophomore Jesus Vazquez (26-7) is currently ranked #4 @ 112.
The scout party of freshmen Indians went to Enka this weekend for a JV tournament and made a very impressive showing. Travis Paap finished #1 @ 112, Sam Monish finished #1 @ 119, Adam Starnes finished #2 @ 145, Justin Baumgarner finish #1 @ 152, Seth Eckard finished #3 @ 189.
On a personal note to finish this update, thank you to the wrestling family and administration of St. Stephens. So many of you have been there to support my family in this most saddest of personal family life. The passing of one's loving parent is the most gut wrenching experience that can be experienced, with the exception of you own child. Nancy and I say thank you for letting us know that you were there for us and thinking of us. I want to also thank my wife Nancy. Her never ending support has eased the pain of this life transition. I have been a most fortunate boy in my life and I thank God everyday in my long silence drive times. Great parents, great wife, great kids, and allowed to participate in a great winning tradition of St. Stephens Wrestling.
My Dad, Roy D. Hoffman, Sr., passed away this past Monday morning after six months of illness. As a proud offsping of this man, I want to take the liberty of telling you his contributions to St. Stephens. In my senior year at St. Stephens he served as the President of the Boosters Club. I was the President of the Student Body. With a kid's mentality, I thought me and Dad would run the important functions of the school and go ahead and let Charlie Bost keep the Teachers in line. Hey, it was fun to at least think that way. The Boosters use to sell fountain drinks at the doorway into the lunchroom to raise money during basketball games. There was no concession stand inside the school at that time. There were no ice machines at the school either, so he would bring the ice in huge canvas bags from the Pepsi plant in Longview every night there was a football or basketball game. He also installed the first sprinkler system ever on the football field to actually try to grow grass. The school was still only a few years old and the were a lot of dirt and rock places on the football field. I think I found them all on Friday Nights. I cussed those idiot running backs for running toward the rocks. Why wouldn't they just slide down while we still had a patch of grass to fall on. I'll always remember watching Dad stand in the pipe trenches as he would put together the piping and the sprinker heads. He was always covered in mud. There was no major water lines in the area at that time, so he had a dam built in the small creek behind the football field to collect water for pumping. I think that dam is still there today. It gives me a hit of silent personal pride everytime I drive down the back road at Ardnt and see that area of the old dam. I say to myself "my old man did that just to help kids". This was a great lesson. He would also assist Catawba Rasslin on fundraisers. He would get up at 4:30 to go the the Charlotte Motor Speedway. He would fry hamburgers and hotdogs until we were sure there wasn't a cow or pig left in North Carolina, just to raise money to support the wrestling program. Many of the wrestling items we have today were funded with his and others dedicated help. If you look at the top of this page you will see a link to past years of Announcements. I built the website this way to make a living history for the short time we have used this web system. I owed it to my Dad to recognize and include him in this history for his efforts to support St. Stephens and St. Stephens Wrestling. Thanks Dad, your lessons will always be with me. Thanks to all of you for your support. Hug your parents, hug your grandparents, hug your kids, hug your spouse, hug your friends. Don't let the clock run out on you before score the winning points of life.

The season opener with Newton-Conover was not successful as the Tribe lost 18-51. Our wrestlers fought back on Saturday at the Viking Duals finished the tournament with a 3-2 record for a 4th place finish.
