Final Year End Action of SSHS Wrestlers
Seniors Adam Hoffman and Lance Greer finish their high school wrestling careers at St. Stephens.
Adam finished with a 47-13 season with a 136-53 career record. This places him third in all time career wins at SSHS. Adam finshed tied for 5th at this years state tournament. He was a three time state qualifier and three time All-Conference.
Lance finished with a 50-7 season with a147-39 career record. This places him second in all time career wins at SSHS. Lance finished in 4th place at this years state tournament. He was a two time state qualifier amd two time All-Conference.
Both Adam and Lance were four year starters for the Tribe. This two wrestlers were counted on heavily over the four years to keep the Tribe in a winning position as the core group of younger wrestlers developed their skills and became more competitive.
To their credit as wrestlers and young men, they have always presented St. Stephens Wrestling to the rest of the state with a respectable and sportsmanship like manner on the mat. In four years of high pressure wrestling they were never called for misconduct on the mat. .
They also competed in an era of growing scheduled matches in the wrestling community. They wrestled more career matches for St. Stephens than any previous wrestlers. Adam represented SSHS in 189 matches, Lance represented SSHS in 186 matches. Thats a lot of wrestling. They took their lumps and they gave them out. It only seems like yesterday that two skinny grinning freshman proudly slipped into the red & grey to battle experienced seniors. Now there is only great and proud memories of personal and team achievements.
Congratulations to both young men on a great career and thank you both for keeping SSHS Wrestling in a winning tradition.
Drew Forshey wins his second straight state title. He had a 55-0 season record and now holds the second longest win streak in the state at 105-0. Drew has moved up to 6th place in all time career wins at SSHS.
Josh Triplett finished the season 50-6 with a career record of 89-20. Josh finished tied for 5th in the state tournament. He moves up to the 14th place in all time career wins at SSHS.
Matt White finished his junior season 37-17 with a career record of 50-36. Matt finished tied for 8th in the state tournament.
There is one other indirect team member that we would like to recognize.
After eight years of dedicated support to the SSHS Wrestling Team, Nancy Hoffman will be relinquishing her role as the unofficial, behind the scenes, Team Mom. This was not an appointed role, but a role she saw that was needed to help the team, the coaching staffs, and the team parents.
She supported the team through 5 coaching changes in 8 years, Darel Reese-4years, John Hardin-1 year, Maurice Atwood-4 weeks, Scott Edwards-1 year, and Billy Baker 2-years. She was instrumental in working with the SSHS Principal, at that time, by contacting and obtaining the services of Scott Edwards, a wrestling alumni of SSHS, when Maurice Atwood left the team and the school just before the wrestling season of 1999.
Note also that SSHS Wrestling will always be grateful for the school spirit of Scott Edwards for stepping in the coaching duties in 1999.
During these eight years, Nancy has provided motel reservation support at all overnight events for the Varsity and Junior Varsity, arranged and managed the food operations for fund raising activities at the Indian Classic, Little Indian, and St. Stephens Freestyle Open, and arranged and managed the registration of the Junior High State Championship Weigh In and Catawba Rasslin Tournaments at SSHS.
Through her efforts she has arranged free transportation for the delivery of the last four wrestling mats, all the new football lockers in the fieldhouse, and various weights for the weight room.
She also arranged the purchasing, payment, and delivery of the black & red striped singlets that Darel Reese wanted for the team in 1996.
While she will always be available to assist and offer experienced guidance, it is just time to move out of the mainsteam and have new parents enjoy the experience of supporting the team.
Just like a graduating senior, her efforts towards a successful season will be missed. Thanks Nancy for all the years of support and effort. Eight years, two sons, and a stressed out old husband was a tremendous contribution to the SSHS Wrestling Team. I never said "Thank You" enough times.

FIVE MAKE IT TO THE STATE INDIVIDUAL FINALS in CHARLOTTE
Sophomore Drew Foshey finishes #1 at 114 and stretches his career win steak to 101-0. This is his second appearance in the State Finals.
Senior Adam Hoffman finishes #4 @ 132 and runs his season record to 44-11. This will be his 3rd straight appearance in the State Finals.
Senior Lance Greer finishes #2 @ 137 and runs his season record to 46-5. This will be his 2nd appearance in the State Finals.
Junior Josh Triplett finishes #1 @ 191 and runs his season record to 47-4. This will be his 2nd appearance in the State Finals.
Junior Matt White finishes #4 @ 277 and runs his season record to 36-15. This will be his first appearance in the State Finals.
As as final note on the Mid West Regional. I never report on questionable officiating calls, but Brandon Sisk was victimized by horrible official judgement and reasoning.
Brandon Sisk was in the semifinal leading 7-5 over Nick Smith of East Lincoln with 54 seconds to go in 3rd. Smith has already stopped the match twice complaining of side muscle cramps. Sisk makes one more leg shot and winds up head down in the middle of the body, both arms extended to pull in both of the opponents thighs. Smith sprawls and pushes his lower belly into the to back of Sisk's head. Sisk hangs on and drives. Smith counter attacks by going underneath with a crossface that lands in the mouth area of Sisk which scrubs across Sisk's braces. Smith starts yelling "He bit me". Official DQs Sisk, out of tournament, out of the state meet, we lose all his points. An upward cross face to the mouth of a face down opponent severs no measure of leverage or counter attack, especially when a wrestler would be pulling directly into the downward pressure of his own stomach. The Official would not even look for sensibilty, did not see the physical act of a bite, only the two (three) scratches left from the braces. Two Medical Staff members certify to Coach Baker that there were no bite marks, only the scratches from the scrubbing on the exterior braces. There is a conflicting report as to what the Medical Staff said to the East Lincoln Coaching Staff. We only know what the SSHS Coach was directly told by the people that attended to the injury. The SSHS staff was not given the opportunity to view the injury first hand. The Official would not reverse his call. After that we lost steam, no way to catch Trinity when we were only 1/2 point out of first.
Since the match there has been a communication from NCHSAA. The NCHSAA tells officials that they are not to DQ a kid unless it is completely obvious that an intentional and malicious bite has taken place. Even though the rules don't state this, if an official does not see it, they are not to DQ a kid. Somehow, this message is not getting across to the sanctioned officials and not widely known by the high school coaches. I know from personal conversations with many highly respected and seasoned officials that they will not call a bite if they did not see the physical act. That is unless there are marks in areas that a wrestler can not inflect apon himself. At the same time, I have listened to novice officials explain that they don't have to see anything physical, only the resulting marks (very gullible assumption). That's a very large area of interpretation on a single rule.
Smith obviously did not self inflect any marks, it all came from an agressive forearm counter attack that landed in the mouth area of Sisk.
The Tournament Grievance Committee can never overturn an officials judgement call, it can only overturn an improper interpretation of a rule. Since the NCHSAA has not been able to educate the officials and coaches about their interpreation of what constitutes an ejection, the Grievance Committee was not aware that they could overturn the ejection from the tournament.
Brandon, you should be going to the State Finals. The Team knows it and every person in the gym that day knows it. All but the uninformed Official.
There is nothing that can be done with this travesity. I strongly urge all coaches, officials, and wrestlers to write to the NCHSAA and ask them for stonger intrepretations of this rule and for it to be clearly passed down to all booking agents, sanctioned officials, and coaches. You, the wrestler, or you the coach with a victimized wrestler will one day need this corrected.

St. Stephens Finishes Second in State Dual Team Competition The wrestlers of St. Stephens entered their final dual team match of the 2001 season in the State 3A Dual Team Finals. They entered and left the match with their heads held high. They lost to last year's defending State 3A Champions, Fuquay-Varina, by a score of 46-11. With 7 of the 14 matches completed the Tribe only trailed 13-11, but the experienced and power of Fuquay pulled them away at the end. Each wrestler put all he could into the match. The coaches knew it, the fans knew it, and Fuquay knew it. Everyone saw great matches that slipped through the grasp of the younger Indians. Fuquay-Varina is much like St. Stephens. An area of proud people that is surrounded by much larger towns. They were very hospitable and cordial to the visiting Indians.
While it was a disappointing loss, the Tribe took great pride in what they had accomplished in placing their mark in the history book of St. Stephens. The young men of St. Stephens may not appreciate it fully now, but when they are old men looking back at their life, they will swell with pride telling the grandkids they made it to the 3A finals in wrestling. A lot of other teams were sitting at home that night looking at the internet to check up on them.
St. Stephens' Brett Vondrehle (105) did all that could be asked from a first year freshman wrestler. He was physically dominated by the more experienced Chris Gaudet and lost a 10-1 major decision. But he did exactly what the Tribe needed from the novice, he avoided being pinned and only gave up 4 points for Fuquay.
Drew Forshey (114) took the mat for the Tribe and scored 13 takedowns for a technical fall 26-11 over Howard Walters. Forshey solidified his hold as the #1 ranked wrestler in the 3A 114 pound weight division and extended his undefeated career win streak to 97-0. He put the Indians ahead 5-4.
Chad Stephens (121) and Derek Crump (127) both lost tough close matches that was within their grasp up to the end of each match. Stephens was down 5-2 at the end of the second period, but could not turn a determined Ryan Dohrn for a closing score. Dohrn scored a reversal at the end of the match to pull away to a 7-2 decision. Crump had a volatile match with Adoni Colon that produced five takedowns, six escapes, and one reversal. There were seven points scored between the two wrestlers in the third period with Colon finishing with a 11-7 win. The score was now Fuquay 10 SSHS 5.
One of the only two seniors for St. Stephens, Adam Hoffman, took the mat in the 132 match against senior Dylan Prevette. Both were two time State Qualifiers, both were ranked wrestlers. Hoffman scored four takedowns and a reversal against three escapes for Prevette and finish the match with a 10-3. That closed the gap on Fuquay to 10-8. This win made the 130 career win for Hoffman and tied him at fouth with Josh Benfield for carrer wins.
This brought up the most anticipated match of the evening, between the Tribe's Lance Greer #3 ranked and Daniel Elliot #1 ranked in the 135 pound match. Greer, the only other senior on the Indians' team, had finished 3rd in the State Finals last year and Elliot had finished 2nd. Both wrestlers put on a great display of wrestling and determination. Greer, down 7-4 at the end of the second period, pulled within one point, 8-9, in the third. In the closing seconds of the match, Elliot obtained an escape and a takedown to seal the match at 12-8 and pushed Fuquay's lead to five points at 13-8.
Nathan Sefcik charged back for the Tribe in a 140 pound match with Andrew Moore. Both are sophomores and both were in the biggest match of their wrestling career. Sefcik controlled the match with a 12-6 finish, but Moore did what was needed to keep the match to a decision. Trailing 12-4 with seconds left, he hit a reversal that narrowed the score to 12-6, thus only giving 3 points to the Indians. This was a great match by two tough young wrestlers. The Indians now only trailed 13-11 with 7 of the 14 matches over.
The Tribe now had to face one the strongest line up of wrestlers in the state. Five of the next seven wrestlers were recognized state ranked wrestlers. Adam Hosterman went against #1 ranked Dusty Simpson at 147, and Matt Helton battled #3 ranked Justin Gulliver at 154. Hosterman, a sophomore, was tech falled by Simpson, but battled out of three nearfall pinning situations in the match. Helton battled out of one nearfall situation and lost by a 17-7 major decision. Fuquay pulled out to a 22-11 lead. The 160 pound match pitted two ranked wrestlers from both teams, sophomore Brandon Sisk for the Indians, and junior George Bouwer for Fuquay. It was a grinding low scoring match. With just seconds left in the third period, Bouwer leveraged a 2 point nearfall tilt to tie the score at 5-5 and put the match into overtime. Bouwer scored the takedown to win the match and put Fuquay ahead 28-11.
There was still hope left for the Tribe with four weigh classes to go, but a come back was not in the future for the Indians tonight. Fuquay's LaRocca Jones (173) caught Ben Godfrey in a throw and pinned in 0:24. Karlton Dixion (191), #1 in the state, battled the Indians' Josh Baumgarner. Baumgarner fought valiantly, but was pinned with 33 seconds left in the third period. The Indians bumped Josh Triplett up to 217 against Hannes Bouwer (217) in a effort to score more points, but Triplett was caught in a move early and was pinned in 1:31.
William Lee (277) won in a last second takedown of Matt White to finish the scoring at 46-11.
Fuquay-Varnia finishes with their second straight 3A Dual Team Championship with a 27-1 record.
The Tribe finished their historic season with a 28-7 dual team record and as the 2001 State Dual Team Runner Up. They are the 2001 Western Region 3A Dual Team Champions, Western Foothills Conference Season Champions, and Western Foothills Conference Tournament Champions, and Indian Classic Champions. They finished second at the West Lincoln Rebel Duals, the Cary News Invitational, and the Palmetto State Classic.
Something to remember when your grandkids are sitting on your lap.

SSHS
Wrestlers Win At Tuscola
St. Stephens won the first and second matches of the 3A State Dual Team Playoffs with wins over East Henderson and Tuscola. Tuscola High School was the host site of the matches. In the first round matches of the evening St. Stephens handled East Henderson with a 57-17 win. North Iredell fell to Tuscola 56-9. This set the Indians against the annual powerhouse Tuscola to see who would move on to this Thursday night round of the state dual team playoff. It was alarming for the Tribe to watch how Tuscola handle North Iredell. The Tribe had beaten North Iredell by a score of 49-21 during the conference dual meets.
Tuscola was in charge of the match after the first four weight classes by a score of 9-7. Tuscola's Blake Magalhaes pinned the Indian's 105 freshman Brett Vondrehle, Drew Forshey 114 of the Tribe defeated Derek Mull 18-7 for a major decision. The Indian's Chad Stephens, trailing 10-0, made an outstanding come back late in the third period in the 121 lb. match to pull to a 12-5 loss. This was critical in that only 3 points were given up to Tuscola. Derek Crump at 127 pulled the Indians up to 7-9 when he decisioned Charles Bax 6-1.
With the Tribe trailing 9-7, it was up to Seniors Adam Hoffman and Lance Greer to put the Tribe back into the dual meet. Hoffman (132) pinned Gavin Brown in 40 seconds to gain back six points for the Indians and give them the first lead of the match at 13-9. Lance Greer responded as well with a first period pin over Blake Cade. The Indians would have gotten six for the match, but Greer was charged with a team point deduction when, in his enthusiasm, he went to the second mat in the gym and executed a front hand spring to a mid air back flip. The wrestling officials, not interested in giving style points for gymnastics, took the action as unsportsmanlike conduct and hit the Indians with a team point deduction. The team point deduction would hang over the head of the Indians all the way to the heavy weight match.
Tuscola then made their run at the Indians. One of the state's best wrestlers, Joel Schick, defeated Nathan Sefcik at 142 with a 5-0 decision. They followed up with Josh King (147) defeating Adam Hosterman 14-1. Josh Fields got a pin for Tuscola at (152). After the run, Tuscola had regained the lead at 22-18.
The Indians then made their own run with Brandon Sisk (162) collecting a 13-9 decision over Ben Earley. Ben Godfrey returned to the line up for the Indians at 171 after a two month injury delay. His return was timely as he was able to muscle a 11-4 decision away from Dennis Downey. Josh Triplett pinned Mark Shuford in 1:55 to run the Indians lead to eight points with a 30-22 score. With only an eight point lead and two matches to go, the crowd knew they were in for a intense conclusion to the dual meet.
The Indians 217 lb. Daniel Eckard stepped to the lead in the second period with an escape, but early the in the third period he was reversed and put to his back with over a minute remaining in the match. To his credit, Eckard was determined not to give up the six point pin that would put Tuscola to within two points of the Indians. He avoided the pin and lost the match by a score of 5-1. Tuscola now only trailed by five points going into heavy weight by a score of 30-25.
The one team point deduction suffered in the 135 match now became a critical issue. Tuscola can now win with a pin at heavy weight to go ahead and put the Indians out of the State Duals. Matt White took the mat for the Indians at heavy weight and Kevin Chaney stepped up for Tuscola. There was no score in the first period. White managed a reversal in the second period. White took neutral in the third period. At 4:34 in the match, White got the leverage for a takedown and took Chaney to his back for the closing pin. The Indians won 36-25.
The Indians will advance to the next round of the playoffs on this Thursday with the location to be named on Wednesday. The Tribe is now 26-6 in dual meets.

Second Straight Western Foothills Championship
St. Stephens closed out the 2001 Western
Foothills Conference season with a 49-21 win over North Iredell.
This gave the Tribe a second straight undefeated 7-0 conference
crown. St. Stephens is now 24-6 in dual meet action for the
season and will have the #1 Western Foothills seed in the State
Dual Team Playoffs next week. North Iredell dropped to a 13-12
overall record with a 4-3 confernce record. North Iredell is in
line for a #3 Western Foothills seed in the State Duals. They are
tied with Fred T. Foard in conference record, but they defeated
Foard in the head to head dual meet
It was Senior Night for the Indians as they honored the only
three Seniors on the team, Lance Greer, Adam Hoffman, and Ben
Wheeler.
Wheeler had wrestled 14 varsity matches for the Tribe during his
two years with the varsity team.
Lance Greer and Adam Hoffman have been four year starters for the
Indians. Greer has 134 career wins and Hoffman has 122. This
places them 3rd and 5th respectively in all time career wins in
the wrestling history of St. Stephens High School. They have been
the corner stones for the Indians since the heavy graduation of
seniors from the Western Regional Championship Team of 1997.
Since they were freshmen in the 1998 season, these two were under
the extra burden of " absolutely must win" in order for
their team to have a chance to win. Greer is 34-4 in all time
conference action and Hoffman is 32-4 against conference
competition.
Hoffman is a two time conference champion at 119 and 135 and a
two time third place finisher at the Midwest Regionals. He has
placed 7th in both of his State Tournament appearance. Greer was
last years Conference champion at 145, finish 3rd at the
Regionals, and place 3rd at last years State Tournament.
St. Stephens won 10 of the 14 matches during the
dual meet. North Iredell's 105 Bee Thao pinned freshman Brett
Vondrehle in the first match of the evening. North Iredell also
won at 127, 147, and 173. 127 Jesse Ledbetter's late third period
pin of Derek Crump kept the Raiders ahead of St. Stephens 12-9.
Joel Privett's decision at 147 and Seth Dufault' 173 pin over
Derrick Callahan was gave North Iredell it 21 points for the
night.
The Tribe put on a strong showing with pins from Drew Forshey
114, Lance Greer 137, Brandon Sisk 162, Josh Triplett 191, and
Daniel Eckard 217. Chad Stephens 121, Adam Hofffman 132, and
Nathan Sefcik 142 provided decisions, Matt Helton 154 major
decisioned for the Tribe.

Other More Important News
William Blake Baker is finally Home.

Nathan Sefcik, a sophomore, has just broken into the Super 32 as the 15th ranked 145 wrestler in the 3A division. Nathan's current record is 27-10 overall with a 2-0 conference record. That makes seven SSHS Wrestlers that are recognized on a state level for their strong showing against state wide competition. Congratulations to Nathan.
Tribe Wrestlers Grab Big
Win From Mooresville
St. Stephens High School 1-12-2001
It was a clash of archrivals in the Western Foothills Conference for the top spot in wrestling. The two teams had battled to a one-point victory for the Indians last season as they completed an undefeated conference season. This year had all the markings of another scrambling finally. Mooresville brought in a solid team with four state ranked wrestlers and a 12-6 overall and 1-0 conference record. The Tribe had its on ars enal of six wrestlers in the state rankings and an 18-6 overall, 1-0 conference record. Tonight's winner would certainly have the advantage to grab the conference title.
With the gym packed in the home stands and the War Chant rattling the rafters, the Ind ians, with its largest squad in 12 years entered the gym as a river of red and flooded the mat for final warm up drills. The gym was hot and the tension was too thick to breathe. There's only one shot at the opposition in wrestling and it was right here and right now.
Chevy Bryant provided the first score for Mooresville over freshman Brett Vondrehle. Vondrehle's inexperience showed, but he was not short of determination. Vondrehle fought off his back on three occasions to prevent the six-point pin by Bryant. Bryant was awarded a major decision with a 15-4 match that put the Blue Devils up only four points.
St. Stephens' 112 Drew Forshey, with an 83-0 consecutive win record, stepped on the mat for the Indians. Mooresville, which weighed in two wrestlers at 112, forfeited to Forshey.
This put the Indians up 6-4 in the match and gave Mooresville an opportunity to send their experienced 112 James Tonthat into the 119 match against the Tribe\rquote s Chad Stephens. Stephens was making his first appearance since his shoulder injury of last week. This was a pivotal match for the Indians. The match rolled back and forth with scoring flurries. Tonthat was ahead 6-4 in the first period. Stephens was ahead 10-8 in the second. With 15 seconds in the third, Tonthat scores with a reversal to tie the score 10-10 and Stevens battles to avoid back points. Stephens forces in on Tonthat in the sudden death overtime period and backs him to the outer third of the ring. Stephens shot a single and spun Tonthat down for the take down and over time victory. Indians up 9-4.
Mooresvilles' Travis Meadows, a state qualifier, pinned freshman Derek Crump at 125 in the second period, after leading the match 6-0. This edged Mooresville ahead with by one point going into the only match up of the night of state ranked wrestlers.
Josh Donaldson, Mooresville's #10 ranked 3A 130, was sent to the mat to face senior Adam Hoffman. Hoffman is ranked #6 in 3A 130 and is a two time conference champion. The match started with an aggressive attack by Donaldson , but was controlled by Hoffman for a 9-0 major decision.
Mooresville then forfeited to the Tribe's Lance Greer, a third place finisher at the state tournament, and sent their 135 pounder, Michael Osborne out to face sophomore Adam Hosterman. Osborne won 8-4 and cut the Indians lead down to six points.
The Tribe's Nathan Sefcik faced off with Adam Lawrence at 145 in a back yard brawl that ended in a 15-14 win for the Indians. Bear Bryant of Mooresville muscled a 9-3 win over Matt Helton at 152 and the Indians' 160 Brandon Sisk pinned to place the Indians ahead with a twelve point lead, 28-16, with only four weights to wrestle.
Mooresville's, #2 state ranked 171 pound, Patrick Marsh stepped onto the mat to cut the lead to six with a pin over freshman Derrick Calllahan.
This set the stage for one last piece of strategy by the Mooresville. They forfeited to the Indians' #2 ranked 189 pound Josh Triplett and sent their more experienced 189 Trey Brawley to battle 215 Daniel Eckard of St. Stephens.
This made the Indians up by 12 and Mooresville would have to pull out two pins in the last two matches to tie the dual meet. If they accomplished this, the dual score would be tied and Mooresville would win by criteria of the most pins.
Mooresville had beaten Eckard at last year's dual meet in 45 seconds by Michael Peters, #10 ranked 215 3A, their current 215 pound wrestler, to force the Indians into a "must win by pin" situation at heavy weight. Matt White, St. Stephens 275 wrestler, won the heavy weight match by pin to give the Indians the victory last year, but at this match, he was not at a 100% due to an ankle injury.
Both young men had to step up for their team in the 215 match. The score was tied 2-2 at the end of the first. Eckard pulled out to a lead at the end of the second 8-6. Both wrestled to near exhaustion in the third and Brawley battle back to 10-8. With one minute left on the clock Eckard got the take down to finish out the match to a 12-8 win. This was a great match between two young men that went to battle for their school. Brawley grappled a great match. The gut check win by Eckard redeemed himself from last year's late match loss and sealed this year's dual meet, and a possible conference championship, for St. Stephens.
The Tribe was now a head by 15 points with only one remaining match. Mooresville sent out Michael Peters at 275. With the match won and their heavy weight with an injury, St. Stephens did something they have rarely ever done. The Indians forfeited a match in which they had a weighed in wrestler. This was a little bit of shock to the celebrating home crowd that wanted more. The Indians win 37-28.
The Indians are now 18-6 overall and 2-0 in conference. They will travel to Hickory High next Tuesday for a 5:00 quad meet and a conference match with Hickory. Hickory is now 5-17 overall and 0-2 in conference. The Indians will also be wrestling West Lincoln at this meet.
Mooresville is now 12-7 overall and 1-1 in conference. Their next match will be next Tuesday at East Lincoln at 6:30. East Lincoln is 8-12 overall and 0-2 in conference.

The score was now 42-16 for the Tribe and one last win was need to definitely capture the first conference win for the Tribe. Indian freshman Derrick Callahan, competing in his first ever conference match, delivered the win for the Tribe with a 5-2 decision over Ryan Swengros at 171.

St.
Stephens 39 vs Watauga 36
1-2-2001
SSHS
WRESTLERS REGROUP, SET MARKS, AND PREPARE OF CONFERENCE
RUN
After a dismal
performance at the East Gaston Warrior Team Duals, the St.
Stephens wrestling team had to regroup their team efforts
to take on another 4A Division powerhouse, Watauga. In
front of the largest home crowd yet, filled with SSHS alumni
wrestlers and wrestlers from other area schools, the Tribe pull
out a thrilling 39-36 win over the Pioneers.
The Tribe was ahead 21-12 after the first six matches with wins from Drew Forshey 112, Derek Crump 125, Adam Hoffman 130, and Lance Greer 135. The next match at 140 was going to be one of three critical matches for the Tribe's victory.
The Indian's Adam Hosterman, a sophomore, went out to challenge the number one state ranked 4A wrestler, Garrett Atkinson. Atkinson's mat skill controlled the match to a 8-2 decision and pulled Watauga to within six points of the Indians. Watauga had more big guns coming up in four of the next seven matches. Although it was a lost, Hosterman's efforts to stay in a good defensive position resulted in only a three point decision for Watauga. Hosterman was disappointed that he lost the match, but the coaching staff was elated at his effort and result. A match, where a less experienced wrestler can keep a known dominate wrestler to only a three point win, can be the event that wins the dual meet. Hosterman's effort would come into play as the dual meet progressed into the later matches.
Watauga then made a surge winning three of the next four matches and moved ahead of the Tribe 27-30. Watauga's ranked wrestlers Mike Kinner and Toddy Lyons won their matches at 145 and 171. Chase from Watauga won a hotly contested match with the Tribe's Matt Helton with a pin at the third period buzzer. Indian Bandon Sisk, at 160 pounds, made up the six point swing by pinning Earp at the 4:32 mark in the third period.
With three matches to go, the Tribe was losing by three points. Watauga still had two dominating wrestlers left in their line up. Tommy Sofield, ranked #11 at 215, and senior Shane Greene, ranked #7 at 275.
St. Stephens' Coach Baker knew that without the possibility of the next two wins, there would be no chance at all in the heavy weight match to pull out the dual meet win. In a strategic move, Coach Baker called upon Josh Baumgarner to content for the 189 pound match. This coaching change would impact the next match at 215 pounds by matching the Tribes Josh Triplett, #2 state ranked 189 pounder against Watauga's #11th ranked 215 Tommy Sofield. This was Baumgarner's first varsity match of the season. Baumgarner has a determined hardcore wrestling style, but has not broken into the main line up ahead of teammate Triplett. Baumgarner faced Cianchetti and scored the first takedown of the match. Cianchetti made a series of excellent skill moves to gain an escape, a takedown, and a two point near fall. All seemed lost for the Tribe as Baumgarner battled off his back with only 1:45 off the clock in the first period, but Baumgarner had no intentions of letting this opportunity escape him. With one quick and decisive move, Baumgarner obtained a reversal and a pinning combination on Cianchetti. The crowd of alumni and supporters for the Indians exploded knowing what Baumgarner was about to accomplish coming of the bench. Baumgarner won the match with a pin at 1:52 mark of the first period and put the Indians back on top 33-30.
The Indians still needed a win. Josh Triplett, the Tribe's regular 189 pounder and ranked #2 in the 3A division, went out to face Watauga's 215 pounder, Sofield. Sofield, a muscularly built wrestler, made the first attack of the match with a lateral throw that landed out of pounds with a resounding boom. Triplett learned from the maneuver and began a series of low attacks that eventually put him up 10-4 in the second period. On the last takedown by Triplett, he caught Sofield in a pinning combination. The pin was called at 3:52 in the second period. The pin was a dual meet winning pin for the Indians as it put them ahead 39-30 going into the heavyweight match.
Watauga's #7 ranked 4A heavyweight Shane Greene pinned the Indian's Matt White to close out the scoring at 39-36 for the Indians.
The Indians' now take a 16-6 dual meet record into the Western Foothills Conference Season. They will face East Lincoln Tuesday night 1-9-2001 at 6:30 at St. Stephens.

Alleghany 35 St. Stephens 30
St. Stephens Wrestling Team's undefeated streak has been stoppped at ten. The positive side to its' first loss was that it took the #1 ranked 2a Division Alleghany Trojans to do it in a sqeaker 35-30. The head to head matchups were even with each team taking 7 wins and 7 losses. The critial factor was that three of the Alleghany wins were pins while the Indians had only two pins.
The Indians advanced to the final match with wins over Lincolnton 59-12 and another barn burner with Kings Mountain that end with three straight pins for the Indians to win 39-37.
Alleghany advanced to the final match with wins over Southwest Guilford 53-14 and West Lincoln 38-27.

Indians
Takedown Greyhounds 42-26
St. Stephens High
School, Hickory, NC
12-05-2000
In a rematch of the top two teams from last week's Indian Duals, the St. Stephens Indians repeated their win over the Greyhounds of Statesville. This time the Tribe stayed with Statesville early on in the match and slow pulled away to seal the match.
The Indian's stronger showing in this match was due to improved wrestling from Freshman Derek Crump (125) and Sophomores Nathan Sefcik (145) and Ben Godfrey (171). All three weight divisions had lost in the earlier match up with Statesville in the Indian Duals.
Hard work and determination paid off as Derek Crump won a 8-3 decision over Chad Messick, Nathan Sefcik evened his head to head match up with Will Madison by winning a 6-2 decision, and Ben Godfrey won his first varsity match after breaking into the Indian line up. His critical 7-5 decision over Mike Gibson put the Tribe ahead 30-22 with only three weigh classes left to be contested. The Indians then took 2 out of the next 3 weight classes to finish the score at 42-26.
The Indians now have an 8-0 dual match record. They will travel to Columbia, South Carolina this weekend to compete in the Palmetto State Classic.

40 Wrestlers Contending for Starting Positions
This has been the strongest and most intense turn out for the Varsity Wrestling Team in many years. The enthusiasm generated by Coach Baker and Coach Reese has rejuvenated our program not seen since the back to back Western Regional Championship Teams of 1996 & 1997. Many former wrestlers are again competing for a starting position as well as many freshmen from last years successful Junior Varsity Program. At this time there are four seniors, seven juniors, seventeen sophomores, and fourteen freshmen grappling there way toward the first wrestle off matches.
Capturing the Western Foothill Conference Championship last year and having Coach Baker named Coach of the Year for the WFC was a big boost to the program as well. There are twelve returning starters from the last years conference winning team and all want to claim a conference title for themselves and the team. Drew Forshey, Adam Hoffman, Lance Greer, and Josh Triplett will be battling to repeat as both conference regular season and tournament champions. Drew Forshey, sophomore, will not only be aiming for second conference title, but a return to the State Championship. Adam Hoffman, senior, will push for his third conference title having only two conference loses in his freshman year to a conference champion senior from Mooresville. Lance Greer, senior, will be shooting for his second conference title after an outstanding year of finishing 3rd in the State Championships. Josh Triplett, junior, is looking to keep on top of the 189 lb. classification and capture his second conference title on his way back to the State Championship
Other returning starters are Chad Stephens, T. J. Yoder, Adam Hosterman, Joe Reardon, Nathan Sefcik, Matt Helton, Daniel Eckard, and Matt White
