Catawba Rasslin had a membership of 43 St. Stephens area Wrestlers this year from the schools of St. Stephens High, Ardnt Middle School, Clyde Campbell, St. Stephens Elementary, and Murray Elementary. We had great parent support, which is always the muscle to operate a volunteer operation. Thanks to all the parents for your support. Our weekly practices will be stopped for now as the summer vacation season begins. We will pick back up in the fall. There are plans for weekly practices with elementary wrestlers. You will be contacted by email.
Please spread the word about our program to other young athletes that your son or daughter might know. Our main goal is to provide a training ground for those athletes that will some day wear the singlet for St. Stephens High School.
I would like to thank Gary Hinson of Foothills Concrete Finishing for his support of our practice facility and Dwight Wilson of E&W Quik Stop on County Home Road for his contineous support of our club. Please visit this store and to show your appreciation.

INDIANS SWEEP
REGULAR
SEASON CONFERENCE WRESTLING
(Turn Up
the Volume)
In wrestling you expect certain things to happen against your
competition. Your seasoned wrestlers have to keep you in the
match, while your less experienced wrestlers fall to the other
team's talented wrestlers. But what you don't know is who will be
the one to pull out a match to win the meet. Sophomore Daniel
Eckard (215) 2-4 in the conference, shut the door on the Red
Raiders of North Iredell in a must win match. His outstanding
effort to pin his opponent put the Indians up 34-26 and out of
reach for a talented North Iredell team and clinched an
undefeated conference 7-0 season for the Indians. The meet ended
with North Iredell's heavyweight Robert Walker pin to close the
barn burning match 34-32 in favor of the Indians.
The whole match depended on the gambles made by Coach Baker to
place his wrestlers in unfamiliar territory. St. Stephens
freshman Drew Forshey was bumped up a weight class to take on the
9th ranked 112 senior Andy Chenevey. Forshey held Chenevey at bay
with a 12-5 decision. This placed the Tribe up 9-0 after two
weight classes. The Raiders countered with their experienced
wrestlers at 119 and 125 as Jesse Ledbetter and Adam Blackwelder
pinned their Indian opponents to take a 9-12 lead.
The Indians grappled back to the lead as their co-captains took
the mat. Senior Darrett Whitfield took control of the 130 match
with a 11-4 win. Adam Hoffman pinned at 135 to complete his
second straight year as undefeated in conference competition.
Lance Greer won with a physical assault to a 17-6 win at 140.
When the co-captains left the floor the Tribe was up 22-12 and
the fate of the season was left in the hands of the
underclassmen.
The key factor now was the determination of the younger Indians
to keep their matches close and stay out of pinning situation.
Freshman Nathan Sefcik lost 4-8 to Jeremy Ehret, sophomore Matt
Helton lost 1-17 to ranked wrestler Jonathan Geisler, freshman
Trey Miller lost 4-9 to Adam Weisner, and freshman Brandon Sisk
bumped up a weight class and lost to Bobby Martin 2-6. Their
effort to hold back what could have been a disastrous run for the
Indians, left the Tribe down by 22-26 with three key weigh
classes to go.
Sophomore Josh Triplett pinned at 189 to pull the Indians back to
a 28-26 lead. The 215 and heavy weight classes were the toss up
matches for the meet. The Raiders had the advantage of
experience. The Indians' Daniel Eckard took his 2-4 conference
record and shear determination on to the mat at 215 and pinned
Blake Englebert to win the meet and an undefeated regular season
for the Indians. That set the meet at 34-26 for the Indians.
Heavy weight sophomore Matt White, who on two occasions in the
regular season pulled the Indians to a conference win, lost to
Robert Walker of the Raiders. This pulled the Raiders close, but
short, to a 34-32 score.
The Indians finish a totally unexpected 7-0 conference season
with a 19-12 overall record. They will travel to Mooresville
Saturday for the Western Foothills Conference Individual
Championship. Drew Forshey, Lance Greer, Adam Hoffman, and Josh
Triplett will take a 7-0 record, with Darrett Whitfield's 6-1
record, into the top seeds of the tounament.

St. Stephens
Locks On To Western Foothills
Wrestling Title
When Billy Baker took over the wrestling program at St.
Stephens, he thought he would have a line up of seniors and
juniors. What he got was a mat full of inexperienced freshman and
sophomores with only three seasoned upper classmen. With patience
and diligence, he turned the Indians back into a contenting
conference championship team.
St. Stephens took a 5-0 conference record into Friday night's
match with the conference contending 3-1 Tigers of Fred T. Foard.
When the evening was over, the Indians had captured their sixth
regular season conference match by a score of 51-19 and set the
lock for a conference title.
St. Stephens' Drew Forshey (37-0) ranked #1 by NCMat at 103
started the evening with controlled match with an eventual pin
over a determined Trevor Sheets of the Tigers. Chad Stephens at
112 clinched with another pin over Mark Kepner. With St. Stephens
up 12-0, the lightweights of the Tigers turned up the heat with
Clint Payne (119), Julian Martin (125), and Nathan Brittian
(130). After their flurry, the Tigers had the lead at 12-13.
The match up of the evening came at the 135 division with the
Indians' Adam Hoffman (25-9), ranked 3rd, faced off against the
Tigers leading wrestler, 6th ranked, Logan Simpson (27-9).
Hoffman scored a 16-1 tech fall decision to stop the match in the
second period and put the Indians on top to stay.
The Indians sweep the next seven weight classes. St. Stephens
Lance Greer (32-4), ranked 2nd, scored a 13-3 major decision over
Justin Dula. The Indians' Nathan Sefcif (145) took his conference
mark to 4-1 over David Brandon and Matt Helton (152) won by a
disqualification over David Brandon. The Tribe collected three
more pins from freshman Brandon Sisk (160) and sophomores Josh
Triplett (189) and Daniel Eckard (215). Indian Trey Miller won
his first conference match of the season with an 8-2 victory over
Zack McEllen. Chris Young (FTF) stopped the Indians role with a
pin over Matt White at heavy weight.
St. Stephens will meet North Iredell in the final conference dual
meet next Tuesday at North Iredell.

St Stephens Wrestlers Battles to Conference Lead
The Indians went to the Vikings' camp at South Iredell last
Friday for a battle for the conference lead. The Indians were 3-0
and South Iredell yet undefeated at 2-0 in the conference and
23-4 overall record. There was tension in the air, as both teams
knew that the conference lead was at stake. There are no second
chances to redeem a lost to a conference opponent in wrestling.
One meet, one chance.
For the Indians it was a matter of their young wrestlers doing
well in the early weight classes to out last the charge of the
more experienced Vikings. South Iredell had 3rd ranked senior
Danny Kincaid at 119 and state qualifier Eric Thompson at 125.
The Vikings also had to power to close out the dual meet in the
upper three heavy weight classes, with senior's Dan Folliard at
189, 5th ranked Chuckie Davidson at 215, and Kenny Bailey at 275.
St. Stephens Drew Forshey (103) put the Indians up 6-0 with a pin
over Shelby Haithcox. Chad Stephens (SS) returned to the line up
for the Tribe and won his first conference match in a decision
over Corey George. This was a key win for the Indians to put them
up 9-0 with Kincaid and Thompson coming to the mat for the
Vikings. Kincaid pinned his opponent for six points. Adam
Hosterman stepped up for the Indians at 125 and lost to Thompson
in overtime by decision. This was a significant feat for the
Indians to be tied 9-9 after the first four weight classes.
The Indians were now position to extend their lead as co-captains
Darrett Whitfield, Adam Hoffman, and Lance Greer took their
weight classes by a decision, a major decision, and a pin. They
are all 4-0 in conference competition. Freshman Nathan Sefcik
keep his unbeaten conference record in tact with a pin of Jared
Horn at 140. After the middleweights had made their run, St.
Stephens' lead was 25-9.
South Iredell struck back with at decision by Matt Lavoie, but
Brandon Sisk of the Indians responded with a pin at 160. The
score was 31-18 for the Indians with South Iredell's big men
coming to the match. Viking Willie Sturgis grabbed a pin at 171
to pull his school to 31-18.
South Iredell was set for the run when an unfortunate
reoccurrence of a football leg injury stopped their 189 Dan
Folliard in the third period. The injury occurred as the two
wrestlers were battling for leverage and position. Tied 3-3 with
Josh Triplett, Folliard could not continue the match as his
injury time had expired. This gave the Indians an insurmountable
lead of 37-18. One would have thought that celebration would have
broke out on the Indian bench, but the opposite took place. Both
benches, coaching staffs, and crowd stood and applauded in
respect for Folliard as South Iredell's assistance coach and St.
Stephens Josh Triplett supported the weight of the injured
wrestler to his bench. Determination and heart is the very core
of wrestling. Folliard is a wrestler in every sense of the word.
Chuckie Davidson and Kenny Bailey closed the match with pins for
the Vikings.
St. Stephens takes a 4-0 conference and 16-11 overall record into
next Tuesday's night match at South Caldwell. They will also
wrestle a non-conference match with 2A power West Lincoln. South
Iredell is now 2-1 in conference with a 23-5 overall record.

St. Stephens Wrestlers
Win Over Hickory
1-19-2000
St. Stephens' Wrestlers improved their conference record to
3-0 with a narrow win over Hickory. The Hickory grapplers were in
the match up the very end. St. Stephen's held a slim 36-33 lead
as it entered the heavyweight division. Matt White (SS), for the
second conference match in a row for the Tribe, had to win the
match to secure the win. White pinned Hickory's Chad Whitherst to
lock the win for the Indians 42-33.
The Indians were down 6-12 after the 119-weight class, freshman
Joe Reardon (SS 125) won his first conference match to pull the
Indians to a 9-12 deficit. St. Stephens' Drew Forshey (103),
Darrett Whifield (130), Adam Hoffman (135), and Lance Greer (140)
pinned to keep the Indians in the match up through the 140-lbs.
division. Hickory's Brian Giovanini (152), ranked 5th in the
state, pinned for the Tornadoes as well as Binh Dang (112) and
Matt Mosley (215).
St. Stephens is now 3-0 in the conference with a 15-11 overall
record. Hickory is 0-3 in the conference with a 3-16 overall
record.

St. Stephens Wrestlers Grab A Big Win Over Mooresville
A unique factor in wrestling is that sometimes a small loss
can make a big difference in a dual match. At the same time, a
win must be huge to avoid a loss. St. Stephens got both Friday
night in their win over Mooresville.
Freshman Joe Reardon battled off pinning situations from
Mooresville's Michael Osborne to avoid a six point loss. Osborne
won 13-4, which gave Mooresville a four point win. This small
loss would eventually give the Indians one small possibility to
win in the heavyweight match.
Darrett Whitfield, 130 lbs. senior co-captain, had an outstanding
performance against 9th ranked Jerry Donaldson. With the Indians
down 6-16, Whitfield made a third period assault that lead to a
takedown and a clenching pin. The Indians stayed in the match
with pins from Adam Hoffman (135) and Nathan Sefcik (145).
Mooresville elected to forfeit to Lance Greer (140).Mooresville
was ahead 30-34 when Josh Triplett (189) rallied the Tribe to a
35-34 lead with a tech fall decision.
With Mooresville ahead 40-35 going into the heavyweight match,
the Tribe put their fate in the sophomore hands of Matt White and
against Mooresville's Neil Belk. All seemed lost as Belk
scrambled to a 7-1 first period lead including a possible match
ending pinning combination from which White escaped. White
started the second period on bottom. After a minute of fighting
off Belk's attempts to break him flat, White managed a reversal
that drove Belk to his back for a pin, six points for the
Indians, and a major Western Foothills Conference win. The bench
exploded as wrestlers and coaches smothered their heavyweight.
This was the first dual meet win over Mooresville since the
conference realignment three years ago.
The Indians go to 2-0 in conference and 14-11 overall. Their next
match is next Tuesday at home against Hickory at 7:00 pm.
