Saint Closes Season
2-7-2020
Saint Finishes the 2019/20 Dual Season as
West Regional Dual Team Runner Up
It has been a rewarding year for our rebuilding team. After graduating 11 Seniors off of last year's 3A Dual Team State Championship team, no one could speculate that our team would prove themselves to be top level state contenders. We started the season not listed in any dual team rankings to finishing in the final 4 of 3A dual team competition. Our "rebuilt" team was only 3 matches away from being in the State Dual Final in Greensboro. This was an over achieving team and will go down in our history as one our best teams. They finished with a 33-9 record.
We travel to North Henderson High School on Friday 2-14-2020 to compete as individuals in the 3A West Regional. This will be two days of wrestling to select the top 4 in each weight class to send to Greensboro for the State Individual Championships. Regional Seeding will take place this Tuesday night.

Saint Updates
The Tribe has had a slow start to the dual 2019-2020 season. We dropped two more matches to a record of 14-6 with losses to RS Central and Hough at the Hilltopper Duals at RS Central on 12-13-2019.
But there are signs of improvement in our young group. Our B-Team was very competitive at the West Caldwell Invitational going against the starting line up of the other schools. Edwin Flores @106 took 3rd place, Brady Connell @ 120 placed 2nd, Kymani Evans @ 138 placed 2nd, and Anthony Bravo @ 145 placed 4th. The Tribe placed 7th out to 10 schools. It was a very impressive that our young wrestlers, mostly freshmen, battled so well in the tournament.
The A-team seemed to get motivated from their team members success and efforts. We traveled to Cary for the Sgt. Mark Adams Holiday Tournament. The Tribe individually took on wrestlers from 25 other teams and placed second behind West Lincoln. Jovanny Urzua @ 113 placed 2nd, Coy Reid @ 120 placed 2nd, Andre Britt @ 195 placed 2nd. Cesar Chavez @ 106 placed 3rd, Justin Beltran @ 182 placed 3rd. Evan Trossi @ 132 placed 5th.
So at this point the team, as a whole, has started on a winning way. We traveled to Lincolnton for the Reindeer Rumble on 12-28-2010. The Tribe won 5 straight dual matches to push our dual record to 19-6. Results can be seen on the Latest News page on the link Current Dual Record.
The highlight of the Reindeer Rumble to the Tribe was the unmatched comeback win over Lincolnton. Lincolnton raked off 5 straight wins to lurch out to a 0-27 lead.. The Tribe started chipping away at the lead with decisions from Garrett Bolling, Beck Nestor, and Jayden Jackson. Score is now 9-27. Six matches left in the dual. We had to have pins to catch Lincolnton. BAM!, BAM!!, KABAM!!!. Dorian Whitworth pins @ 0:51 (15-27), Justin Beltran pins @ 0:35 (21-27), and Andre Britt battles to 5:17 to pin (27-27). Robert Valencia battles to the end of the match and keeps the Tribe close with a 2-3 loss (27-30).
With two matches left and losing 27-30, the Tribe had Senior Ryan Campbell and Freshman Cesar Chavez left to make the win.
Ryan goes out to a 8-2 lead and then pins in the second period at 3:49. Now 33-30.
Freshman Cesar Chavez steps on the mat in his biggest dual match of his young career. If he is majored or pinned, Lincolnton wins. Cesar fulfills his destiny, He storms out to a j8-3 lead. In the second period he scores a takedown and pin at 2:23. Saint wins 39-30. A great comeback for the Tribe.
Friday 1-3-2020 we have our first Northwest Conference match of the season at Freedom. Bus leaves at 4:00 pm.

Saint Downs Newton-Conover 36-24
BIG WIN for the Tribe tonight!!!! Saint now moves to a 12-3 season record. A full team effort to hold the line and win the tight matches. Pinning tonight for the Saint was
Dorian Whitworth went up a weight class and started the Tribe off with great hard fought win against Cole Clark @ 182 with a 8-6 decision. Saint dropped the next 3 matches by 2 decisions and one pin. That put the Tribe down 3-12. It didn't look good at this point as the Red Devils of Little Pigs BBQ seem to have the hog wild power over the Road Side Tribe. Butt-t-t-t!
Bamm!!!! Freshman Edwin Flores, 106 pounds of Shell's BBQ, crushed a pin @ 106 in 0:25 of the first period. Holey Smoked Pork Loin!!! The Tribe came a live. Now Saint 9 Newton Conover 12. Braxton Hankinson got a forfeit because Newton-Conover @ 113 ate to much of the delicious Little Pigs BBQ. (hard to resist). Saint pulls ahead for the second time 15-12
Now came the match of the night. Top level wrestlers. Our Jovanny Urzua and Camden Spenser of Newton-Conover. It ended with a hard fought win for Urzua with a 4-3 decision. This was a great match to watch for people who love great wrestling. It was a tribute to both of this young men. Saint pulls ahead of Newton-Conover 18-12.
Coy Reid at 126 was award a win as the Newton-Conover's 126 didn't even get to the starting whistle. He came of the mat with a wrist bracelet which was a automatic point against him. He said something to the mat official that was not phrased in the Kings English. He was disqualified. NOTE TO WRESTLERS: WORDS MATTER!! Saint jumps to 24-12.
Evan Trossi wins a 4-2 @ 132 decision to extend the lead to
27-12. Dalen Milligan loses at 138 but holds off the Newton opponent to a
decision. Saint 27-15. There were still 24 points to be awarded. We
were not out of the woods yet!
That is when a team effort really matters. Garrett Bolling
wins a decision. Saint 30-15, but Newton had a chance at 18 more points. Beck
Nestor holds the line in a lose at a decision. 30-18 with 12 points still to be
fought for the match. Now it look like a possible tie!
Jayden Jackson goes to mat at 160. He closes the door on Newton-Conover with a pin at 3:22. Saint 38-18.
Ervin DeLa Cruz went against the State Champion at 170. He was pinned but he was there for the Tribe. Saint 38-24.

Saint Finishes 2-3 at Lake Norman Duals
Saint defeated Apex Friendship 67-12 and Nation Ford 61-15. We lost our first match of the season against a very solid team of Central Academy of Technology & Arts 45-28. That lost broke our win streak of 54 straight wins since the beginning of last year's season.
The Tribe went on to lose two heartbreakers. We lost to Cardinal Gibbons 30-37 and then to Lake Norman 33-41. Both matches came down to the last two bouts of the match. They were nail biters.
We are now 11-3 on the season.
The JV squad will have two events this coming week. Wednesday is the JV matchup with Rock Hill, SC at home, and the 8th Annual JV Indian on Friday evening.
The Varsity will travel to Newton Conover on Thursday and then at home on Saturday for the 48th Annual Indian Classic.

Saint Wins Over Bandys 66-8
The score hides the toughness of this match on an individual bases. Bandys gave up 5 forfeits which accounted for 30 points for the Tribe. The point to make is that highlights the strength of our program. We contest every weight class by having wrestlers that make weight and come prepared to wrestle. We have 5 Seniors, 10 Juniors, 10 Sophomores, and 28 Freshman on the team battling for a starting position.
Saint captured 5 pins with Garrett Bolling @145, Jayden Jackson @160, Andre Britt @195, Hunter McCall @285, and Cesar Chavez @106. Hunter McCall made his first ever varsity match by getting a pin in 0:50.
Daniel Queen and Evan Trossi had hard fought wins for the Tribe. Daniel pulled away late in the 3rd period to score 7 points to finish his win with a 12-5 decision. Evan scored 4 takedowns in his match to seal a 10-6 decision.

Saint A Team Wins 5 Dual Matches at Forbush
B-Team Takes 5th Place at South Caldwell Dekota Smith Invitational
A busy weekend for the wrestling team as the Varsity A-Team went undefeated with 5 wins at Forbush High School. The Varsity B-Team places 5th in a field of 14 varsity teams at South Caldwell.
The Varsity A-Team had five overpowering wins to go undefeated in the dual tournament. Score can be seen on the Current Record link on the 'Latest News" page. The Tribe won 64 out of 70 matches ups and out scored the opposing teams 366 to 30 team points.
The match of the day was our Jovanny Urzua vs Eli Thomas of Forbush in the first round of the day. Thomas was a 2019 State Runner Up and currently ranked #1 in the 2A division. Jovanny made the first score of the match with a take down in the first period. Thomas deferred his choice in the second period. Leading 2-0, Jovanny took down.. He worked an escape and another take down to go ahead 5-0. Thomas scored a reversal to close out the second period score 5-2. Thomas took down in the third period and scored a reversal. Now 5-4, with a bunch of time remaining. (seemed like an hour). Thomas was tough on top and Jovanny was determined not to give up a back point. The period ended with no more scoring and Jovanny won 5-4. After having his shoulder stretched out, Jovanny can now untie his shoes with one hand while standing up straight.
The Varsity B-team placed 3 wrestlers in the top 3 spots of
their respective weight class.
Sophomore Evan Trossi took 2nd place in the 138 lb. division. He pinned
his way to the final with 3 consecutive pins.
Freshman Brady Connell tied for 3rd place at 120 lb division.
He had two pins and a 7-1 decision to make it to the consolation final.
Junior Manuel Carranza tied for 3rd place at 285 lb division. He had four pins
and one loss to make it to the consolation final.
(3rd place ties are set when a 5 match daily rule takes affect.)
Our next event is Tuesday Night 11-26-2019 against Bandys at 6 pm.

St. Stephens Wrestling 2019-2020
Welcome to the 52nd year of wrestling at St. Stephens. After a stellar year in 2018-2019, with the undefeated 43-0 season ending in a 3A Dual Team State Championship, the Tribe will once again strive to win championships for “Dear Ole St. Stephens High School.” (which is the title of the school fight song for those of you that didn’t know that fact)
Parents meeting will be at the school on Wednesday at 6:00 in the cafeteria.
Opening matches will be this Thursday 11-21-2019 at Maiden. The Tribe will take on Maiden, Hickory, and Bradford Preparatory. Weigh in will be at 4:30 and matches will start on two mats at 5:30.
We have 57 wrestlers on the roster this year. Seniors 5, Juniors 12, Sophomores 11, and Freshman 29.
Our schedule is on our website. www.saintwrestling.org
