Saint Wins Conference Opener Against Patton

The night started off well with Saint winning 2 out of three preliminary matches.  Ethan McCrary pinned at 0:27. Austin Pickard pinned at 2:11 after building a 9-3 lead in his match.

The match started at 195 with Bryson Arrowood(a distant cousin to "Bane" in the Batman movie).  Bryson squeezes a 1:46 pin to start the Tribe off and we never lost the lead.  Wanya "I got toes" Rankins followed with another pin.

Our next three wrestlers lost, but held the line for the Tribe. Josh Beltran lost by decision in an hard fought and questionable overtime match. Graham Ormand at 106 fought 9th ranked Zeb Patton back from a 2-12 deficit in the second period to 9-14 in the final period. Luke Queen held off 4th ranked Donte Norwood for just a 3-10 decision.  Our wrestlers wrestled well and did not give up additional points.

With the score 12-9 the Tribe plowed ahead with pins and wins.  Blake Baker, Eddie Brannock, Zack Berkey, Tucker Justice, and Tyler Laxton pinned for the Tribe. Ivan Vergel majored. Dakota Griffith and Nolan Foster won decisions.

Freshman Salvador Gilvaja faced off this Patton's senior and 6th ranked 3a wrestler Santiago Morris. Morris's experienced kept him in control of the match, but Salvador stayed in good position and was constantly fighting back. Morris won 2-11, but Salvador's efforts kept Patton's scoring down to 4 points.

Saint is now 1-0 in conference action and 27-4 overall.

Saint Wins Cary Sgt. Mark Adams Invitational Tournament

It was a great performance by our wrestlers in all 14 weight classes. Thirteen wrestlers finished in the top 5 and one that did not placed racked up 7 points for the team. The strength of numbers and the fact that the Tribe pinned 29 times during the tournament lead them to a 46.5 point lead over Cary going into the Championship Round. The Tribe's first appearance in this tournament started in 2000. After years of 2nd and 3rd place team finishes, this was the first ever Championship win at the Cary tournament.  Our fan support was strong and, at times, very vocal and uncontrollable.
A GREAT WEEKEND OF WRESTLING

Saint Downs Bandys and 2A #1 Ranked East Burke

Saint hosted Bandys tonight and the current 2A #1 ranked East Burke team.  Bandys only had 5 active wrestlers on their team tonight and the Tribe did not loose a single match.
The final score was 81-0.

East Burke came into newly remodeled Baker Arena to take on the Tribe. The Tribe had already defeated East Burke at the South Caldwell Duals by a score of 41-29.  East Burke came in ranked on www.retrorankings.com as the #1 2a team and had 4 top ranked wrestlers in their lineup.

Tribe Seniors Nolan Foster, and Tucker Justice start the Tribe off with two first period pins and the Tribe was out in front 12-0.  Junior Tyler Laxton faced off with #6 ranked senior Jacob Prestwood and would not give up a pin. He lost 1-14, but held the Cavilers to 4 points.  Senior Bryson Arrowood grabbed a first period pin to up the Tribe up 18-4.

Freshman Jesus Ibarra faced #4 ranked Landon Page and lost in a first period pin. Tribe 18 East Burke 10. Jesus has fought hard for the Tribe and continues to step into the line up to help in the team match plan. Keep up the hard work Jesus.

Wanya Rankins grabbed a 2nd period pin to put the Tribe ahead 24-10. Beefy, always striving to bring new wrestling techniques on to the mat, was cautioned for an illegal "Diamond Cutter". A two handed neck spinal tap in the rear neck area from the referee top starting position. Even the official was taken back at Beefy's innovative wrestling skills, but it was ILLEGAL. OK Beef. No more Diamond Cutters!!!

Freshman Graham Ormand fell to #2 ranked senior Jacob McMonagle closing the gap to 24-16. Sophomore Luke Queen won a 6-1 decision giving the Tribe a 27-16 lead.  Ethan McCrary fell to #2 Christopher Gilbert to close the spread again to 27-22.  That is all the scoring East Burke was able to grab from the Tribe. Blake Baker, Dakota Griffith, Zack Berkey, and Ivan Vergel pinned for the Tribe and Eddie Brannock majored giving the Tribe a 55-22 win.

One Final Thought
In this pathetic age of PC and being polite so the other team does not feel bad if our wrestler wins, just remember that this is wrestling.  There is no "Participation Trophy" and you don't get a "sticker" for being present. You dominate or go sit down. There is nothing wrong with YELLING and CHEERING for our wrestlers.  Our fans need to be more vocal before, during, and after the match.  Cheer and support every wrestler. Get the Grandparents involved.  Get your neighbors involve. Things were getting started at Newton, but last night was very mild mannered for a big match. Bring it on Saint!

Saint Wins the R-S Central Duals

Saint went undefeated in the eight team dual tournament Friday tonight with three wins in our pool and won the next round of winners from the opposite pool of four.

Saint lead off against a short handed South Point team which gave up nine forfeits. Saint won 74-6. Pinning for the Tribe was Graham Ormand and Zack Berkey. Dakota Griffith and Eddie Brannock both scored major decisions.

Our second match was against McDowell HS and the Tribe cursed to a 63-9 win. Luke Queen, Dakota Griffith, Austin Pickard, Zack Berkey, Tucker Justice, Tyler Laxton, and Wanya Rankins obtained pins. Ivan Vergel scored a techfall and Eddie Brannock won a major decision.

The last pool match was against Pisgah.  Saint won this with a 51-16 score. Pinning for the Tribe was Blake Baker, Austin Pickard, Nolan Foster, Tucker Justice, and Bryson Arrowood.

Saint was pitted against the second place finisher from the other pool, Ashbrook.  The Tribe jumped out to a 40-0 lead before Ashbrook scored. Saint won 59-12. Pinning for the Tribe was Austin Pickard, Zack Berkey, Nolan Foster, Tucker Justice, Tyler Laxton, and Wanya Rankins. Luke Queen and Eddie Brannock scored major decisions.

Due to the lateness of the evening and that the number one team from the opposite pool lost to Pisgah, Saint was declared the tournament winner.

Saint Upsets Newton-Conover

This was an old time brawl the way it use to be in years past between these two schools. Saint, which was the underdog coming into the match, would not relent on it's efforts to win this match. It was a was battle to the very end. After everyone's best efforts, the match came down to freshman Salvador Gilvaja to make or break the match for the Tribe. Saint was up by 6 and Salvador had to hold the line for the Tribe. He could not get up a pin and he did not. Salvador lost 9-1, but sealed the match for the Tribe by not giving up a pin.

Pinning tonight for the Tribe were Tyler Laxton, Wanya Rankins, Blake Baker, and Zack Berkey. Dakota Griffith grabbed a major decision.

The match was always just out of reach for both teams as Saint would surge and then Newton-Conover. Eddie Brannock pulled the Tribe even with NC at 25-25 with four weight classes left. Zack Berkey pinned to put the Tribe up 31-25, but Newton was hit with an unsportsmanlike 1 point penalty to make it 31-24.  Freshman Ivan Vergel holds off NC with just a decision loss 2-3 making the score 31-27, but somebody on the Saints' bench was hit with a team point for "constructive advice", Saint 30 NC 27

Nolan Foster jumps out to an early major lead, buts gets caught in the third period and fights off a pinning combination for 45 seconds to win his match 12-11.  SS 33 NC 27.

It was left up to our freshman Salvador Gilvaja to stay off his back and against his upper classman opponent. He gave up 4 takedowns and an escape and stayed on bottom for three
l-o-o-o-n-n-n-n-g-g-g-g periods. He never gave up a single nearfall.  He lost 9-1. Newton scores 4 points. Saint wins 33-27.

It was a great team effort. Everybody left what they had on the mat. The way it should be.

The Tribe finally had the assistance of a vocal fan base tonight. Several times during the match the Saint faithful would rise up to over shout the NC crowd.  It was great and appreciated support from our fans. Keep it going gang.

The Tribe defeated Maiden 55 -21 this evening. The final score does not reflect the toughness from all the wrestlers involved in the individual matches. Every match up was a challenge and some matches were just won by raw determination.

Every year the Maiden program gets tougher under the leadership of Head Coach Sean McGovern. His group was ready and came out aggressive in all the match ups. Several key matches could have gone either way. We tip our hat to the Maiden team and Coach McGovern.

Pinning tonight for the Tribe was Luke Queen, Blake Baker, Dakota Griffith, Austin Pickard, and Ivan Vergel. Nolan Foster scored a 10-2 major decison. Wanya Rankins finished the night with an 8-3 decision.

Saint Places 2nd at the 16th Annual Indian Duals

The Tribe lost a close match with Davie County in the match up of the night for a chance at the championship of the Indian Duals.  Saint was leading the score with just two matches remaining, but were not able to maintain the lead. All the match results can be seen on the Indian Duals page. Please go there for all team dual scores.

The best team news of the night was that this year's Tribe is stronger, more balanced, and competitive. Just a few matches with a little better come would have won the match and the overall duals.
